Hot cross buns, hot cross buns, one a penny two a penny hot cross buns!
There has been a long-standing debate in our house since I was little over hot cross buns. What are hot cross buns you ask? Hot cross buns are a traditional sweet bread made with cinnamon and fruit, and marked with a cross. Now, using frosting for the cross or flour dough is a whole different argument all together, but in our house, we defiantly go the frosting route.
When I was growing up, these spicy sweet buns were baked every Easter. Our great grandma, then our grandma, then our mom all made them with candied fruits. Let me tell you now, don’t go there, their nasty. When the kids all stopped eating them (yes, we’re a spoiled bunch), my mamma, thank the heavens, switched to mixed dried fruit which changed the whole aspect of these lovely morsels and turned them into the perfect Easter treat!
Sometimes you can catch these sweet rolls sold in the grocery store or at a local bakery too, but they are super easy to make. You really can’t go wrong with the smell of fresh baked bread in the house.
